It represents the fifth generation of books on this subject written by its author. Significant additions and revisions have been made in this edition. Chapters 2 and 3 contain new material intended to assist the engineer in understanding factors affecting the time-dependent properties of the reinforcement and concrete used in prestressing concrete, as well as to facilitate the evaluation of their effects on prestress loss and deflection. Flexural strength, shear strength, and bond of prestressed concrete members were treated in a single chapter in the of flexural strength has third edition. Now, in the fourth edition, the treatment been expanded, with more emphasis on strain compatibility, and placed in Chapter 5 which is devoted to this subject alone. Chapter 6 of this edition, on flexural-shear strength, torsional strength, and bond of prestressed reinforce­ ment, was expanded to include discussions of Compression Field Theory and torsion that were not treated in the earlier editions. In similar fashion, expanded discussions of loss of prestress, deflection, and partial prestressing now are presented separately, in Chapter 7. Minor additions and revisions have been made to the material contained in the remaining chapters with the exception of xv xvi I PREFACE Chapter 17. This chapter, which is devoted to construction considerations, has important new material on constructibility and tolerances as related to prestressed concrete.

Great choice for parents and their students who need textbooks in excellent condition

This year our children's public school books are online. "Online" is a VERY POOR CHOICE for science textbooks, because our online access does not show text and pictures/diagrams all on the same "page" like the book does.

So, why write about this textbook?

Simple. We chose to make the sacrifice "for science" and it has really paid off. While other students are still struggling with the homework and reading assignments, our child now has had the ease of being able to open the book at home and simply learn the material. Pictures and text together seem like a miracle of modern science and technology in this brave new paperless fahrenheit 451 post hard copy textbook world.

Kudos to you all on getting a beautiful and pristine "nearly new" textbook to our house at a very reasonable price. Sorry our school system has been pressed into buying online access that isn't all that good for science books.

This book matches the required text book page for page with the "Georgia Standard" for 7th grade general science. It covers basic scientific process and has logically organized lessons. Holt tends to print the same book with each State name in the title if the State decides that the book meets their standard (For us, it's AKS... Academic Knowledge and Skills curriculum). Does it meet common core requirements? I don't know. If I were homeschooling my children, I would feel very comfortable with this text and the basic knowledge it provides. I teach in the science field at the graduate level, and this information is a good foundation that is easy enough to understand at the 7th grade level.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

This book can be an invaluable aid to students in geometry as a supplement to their textbooks. The book is divided into 52 chapters, each dealing with a separate topic. The subject matter is developed beginning with lines and angles and extending through analytic (coordinate) and solid geometry. Sections on constructions, coordinate conversions, polygons, surface areas, and volumes have also been included.
Each chapter in the book starts with a section titled Basic Attacks and Strategies for Solving Problems in this Chapter. This section explains the principles that are applicable to the topics in the chapter. By reviewing these principles, students can acquire a good grasp of the underlying techniques and strategies through which problems related to the chapter may be solved.

HOW TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND
A TOPIC THOROUGHLY

1. Refer to your class text and read the section pertaining to the topic. You should become acquainted with the principles discussed there. These principles, however, may not be clear to you at the time.
2. Then locate the topic you are looking for by referring to the Table of Contents in the front of this book. After turning to the beginning of the appropriate chapter, read the section titled Basic Attacks and Strategies for Solving Problems in this Chapter. This section is a review of the important principles related to the chapter, and it will help you to understand further how and why problems in the chapter are solved in the manner shown.
3. Turn to the page where the topic begins and review the problems under each topic, in the order given. For each topic, the problems are arranged in order of complexity, from the simplest to the more difficult. Some problems may appear similar to others, but each problem has been selected to illustrate a different point or solution method.
To learn and understand a topic thoroughly and retain its contents, it will generally be necessary for students to review the problems several times. Repeated review is essential in order to gain experience in recognizing the principles that should be applied and to select the best solution technique.

HOW TO FIND A PARTICULAR PROBLEM

To locate one or more problems related to particular subject matter, refer to the index. In using the index, be certain to note that the numbers given there refer to problem numbers, not to page numbers. This arrangement of the index is intended to facilitate finding a problem more rapidly, since two or more problems may appear on a page.
If a particular type of problem cannot be found readily, it is recommended that the student refer to the Table of Contents and then turn to the chapter which is applicable to the problem being sought. By scanning or glancing at the material that is boxed, it will generally be possible to find problems related to the one being sought, without consuming considerable time. After the problems have been located, the solutions can be reviewed and studied in detail.
For the purpose of locating problems rapidly, students should
acquaint themselves with the organization of the book as found in the Table of Contents.
In preparing for an exam, it is useful to find the topics to be covered in the exam from the Table of Contents, and then review the problems under those topics several times. This should equip the student with what might be needed for the exam.

Excellent resource, really does the trick.

I bought this book right after I started a class in Linear Algebra where the first chapter had us working some geometric proofs using the rules for vector addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication.

Although this book strictly focuses on geometry and does not use vectors in its proofs, it did clearly illustrate proofs that were easy enough to think through in terms of vectors.

The book is well-written and begins with a review of Methods of Proof, Lines & Angles, Perpendicularity, and Triangles before getting into specific geometric forms.

900+ pages and 900+ problems with a summary of theorems and properties at the end of the book. Some reviews at Amazon contain complaints about REA Problems Solvers, but I have always liked them and I really like this one. They are not intended to replace a textbook, but to give lots of examples over-and-above what a textbook would include.

For example, a few years ago I was studying College Algebra and I was having trouble understanding logarithms. So I reviewed the examples in the REA Problem Solver for Algebra and Trigonometry and worked some problems along with the REA book and then I saw how simple they really were. I have purchased REA Problem Solvers for Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra as well and have found all of them to be helpful with some being more useful or better-written than others.

One of the complaints about these books is that they are all written using a Courier-style font. This is true, but there are still Greek symbols, integral signs, exponents, etc (e.g. you do not see 10-squared written as 10^2 - they use a superscript for the exponent). Another complaint that I have seen is that they contain errors. I have not noticed any, but that does not mean there are none present. I do not review these books cover-to-cover, but take a look at those topics that I need to review, so I may not have encountered any errors but they could still be present.

Purchased new, the books may seem a bit pricey if you are on a budget (nowadays the books have a list price of $30.95 for some subjects and $25.95 for others, with discounted prices ranging between $17.95 and $30.25). I always buy them from the affiliated 3rd-party booksellers on Amazon. I got my Geometry Problem Solver extremely cheap $3.15 plus $3.99 for S&H - total of $7.14 and the book arrived in a couple of weeks and was in excellent condition (like new!).

Most of the time I have spent in the $12-$15 range (incl S&H) for these guides. Even if I only were to find help on a single topic within the book, that, to me, is still a bargain. Especially so if you consider the price relative to the cost of tuition and textbooks. If you are really price conscious, most college libraries have copies that are rarely checked out. Until my copy was shipped, I used the one in our library and saw that it had last been checked out in 2004!

p.s. I am 54 years old and went back to night school and started studying math 3 years ago with College Algebra, Trig, PreCalc, Calc 1,2,3, Diff Eq, and now Linear Alg. I have had REA guides for all of the classes and have found them useful in every case.

Enough review and you get it

I wanted to get better at organizing my mind. You knew they taught Chess at West Point. Right? Well, Geometry makes you think. It makes you think in logical steps for problem solving. This book just gives example after example and exhaustively ingrains how to solve Geometry problems. Along the way it coincidentally builds your endurance for solving other problems. This may not be the best book or the most cutting edge but it has such a huge mass of answers and ways to arrive at them that you will absorb the methods. I like it. You might say that if you stare at these pages long enough that you learn by osmosis. I think there should be a book like this in every field of endeavor. Call it canned experience. Oh, a better typeset would be nice.

Great tools for phonics and reading skills

Very colorful illustrations and fun stories to engage young readers. Not only they practice their phonics but reading skills too. The only thing is it's a little pricey at $3/book, and they never lower the price. I recommend buying used ones.

Taking full advantage of the ease with which the Sherman absorbed modifications, British forces adapted Shermans as minesweepers, amphibious assault float tanks, bulldozers, flame throwers, CDL tanks for nighttime attacks, carriages for tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery, among other uses.

The Sherman, the epitome of American prowess in mass production, played an integral role in infantry support and fought in every major theater of operation in WWII. Due to its reliability, adaptability, and sheer strength in numbers, the Sherman M4 served with unmatched longevity, and Hunnicutt touches upon the wide range of combat conditions that the M4 performed under, in addition to its post-WWII activity.

Richard Pearce Hunnicutt (1926-2011) enlisted in the 7th Infantry Division in 1944 and in 1945 was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions. After WWII, Hunnicutt earned a Masters in engineering from Stanford University under the GI Bill. In addition to being one of the most respected metallurgists in California, Hunnicutt wrote the definitive 10-volume history of the development and employment of American armored vehicles. As a tank historian and leading expert in the field, Hunnicutt was one of the founders of the US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD and was a close friend and frequent contributor to the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, KY.

The standard reference on the M4 Sherman medium tank

Even though this work dates back to 1978, it can still be regarded as the ultimate book on the M4 Sherman. It describes the pre-war development of the American medium tanks, then covers the development and production of the M3 Lee/Grant including all marks and variants. The M4 development and production is covered in detail with all marks and variants, upgrades and modifications. British service and modification are also covered. Postwar employment and conversions are included, even though Israeli and other post war conversions are not covered in detail.
There are extremely detailed specifications of the M3 and M4, all marks and many of the variants like the M7 and M10. You will also find the specs on most weapons employed on the M3, M4 and variants.

If you are interrested in the technical development and production of the M3 and M4 tanks, this book is a must. Well written with 100s of b/w illustrations it is, despite the price, great value.

The M-4 Sherman Tank

It's hard to imagine there could ever be a better book about the Sherman than this. R.P. Hunnicutt has written 10 books on US Armor that covers every major ground weapon system ever designed by the Army - this is perhaps the best of the best.

Hunnicutt goes back to WW1 tracing the search for a medium tank. The inter war years are covered very well, the reader sees the early models such as the M-2, M-3 and designs leading up to the Sherman. One of the amazing things about the Sherman is how quickly it went from design to production, with few of the teething problems that typically plague new tanks. From the start, it was designed to be "an exploitation tank". As the author notes, it did that very well. As early as 1942, it was recognized it needed a better cannon and more armor.

The issue of firepower and protection mean heavier tanks, disruption of assembly lines and fewer tanks shipped overseas. The debate was never ended to anyone's satisfaction. And the book does an excellent job covering all of the attempts to improve both. The lack of a good solution meant that the price was paid for by the tank crews in battle.

The advantage of such huge numbers of Shermans meant an endless supply of tank chassis available for literally hundreds of variants - tank destroyers, mobile artillery, recovery, engineering to name but a few are reviewed in part IV. The Sherman saw action on every front of WW2, in Korea, and as late as 1967 with the Israeli's. Hunnicutt sums up the decisions made regarding the Sherman very concisely in his conclusion on page 512.

The book is rich with illustrations, line drawings, facts, photographs of the inside, every aspect of the vehicle and weapon statistics on every version built. 576 pages detail out everything you'd want to know about the history of the Sherman tank. An absolute classic, must have book for any serious armor buff. Certainly the most comprehensive studies ever done on a tank, highly recommended.

Best Sherman Book - But Don't Pay More than $130
