Worth the time

Adam has a great style, he's funny, upbeat and tells it like it is. This book has been on my nightstand for the last 2 weeks, read a few chapters every night. This man wants you to succeed, it's like having an honest male friend coaching you every step of the way. Definitely worth reading!

An absolute must read sound advice I've been following way before I knew about Adam LoDolce.

What I've read is sound advice, I've been following the same advice Adam teaches way before reading "Men Love Confident Women". I am learning it is super awesome to be a feminine woman who also has confidence in her self ( this book does not teach how to be a conceited gold digging diva). A woman with her own interest and hobbies who does not wait around to have a man in her life in order to be happy, she is happy with the woman she is right now inside and out. And learns that it is 100% okay to be single. How to say no to the burger and fries eating men (bad boy types) who do not want to ever be in a relationship that ask women out. How to say yes to (the nice guy women would never dream of dating) the kind of men who are fit kale eating and protein smoothie drinking healthy men who want to be in a relationship, who ask women out. This is what sexy confidence is truly all about.

You will be more than happy!

Reading Adam's book not only restored my confidence, but also restored my dignity. The whole time you read the book it is an enjoyable experience. The best part of the process is, while I'm learning I'm laughing out loud. This helpful book has life-transforming lessons: Seek healthy places to meet healthy men, relationship status does not equal happiness, own your weirdness, initiate conversation, don't invest more in a man than he invests in you. So many more great points are in this book you will have to buy it yourself to enhance your life!

Christopher Lasch was a cultural critic who sought to redirect America's public philosophy through tough-minded essays of cultural and moral criticism. For several decades, Lasch wrote some of the most compelling and erudite essays in American letters, eschewing the wastrel and faddish trends that afflict much contemporary criticism. The end of his work was nothing less than the reshaping of our own self-understanding. Lasch attempted to make clear to his thinking readers that there is greater purpose in human life than "making it" either in business or the bedroom, combating the powerful drives of greed, lust, and pride in what he saw as our consumerist culture. In Women and the Common Life, Lasch directs his attention toward issues of marriage, feminism, and the men's movement in nine succinct essays that focus on the latent ideals of love and commitment. Too smart to lapse into false nostalgia for set gender roles or "traditional"family structures, Lasch rejects both the Right's unthinking conservatism as well as the Left's loose talk of "oppression" and "liberation." Instead, Lasch challenges gender theorists to consider their complicity in making market success a dominant social and political goal and to reappraise the cultural accomplishment of companionate marriage, which Lasch describes as a "union of desire and esteem." In this collection of essays edited by his daughter, historian and educator Lasch, who died in 1994 and is best known for his best-selling The Culture of Narcissism (LJ 11/15/78), discusses women, feminism, and marriage. The volume contains previously published essays with one exception: "Bourgeois Domesticity, the Revolt Against Patriarchy, and the Attack on Fashion," which analyzes the ideas of Mary Wollstonecraft, Hannah More, and the domestic ideal of the 18th and 19th centuries. The other pieces here review and sometimes deconstruct the works of others in the field of gender studies, such as Carol Gilligan and Betty Friedan. One recurring theme is the observation that the "traditional" family, which most feminists critique, is a fairly recent phenomenon. That this collection of nine essays (all but one previously published) was assembled as Lasch faced death is a tribute to his fortitude and his enduring commitment to intellectual dialogue. His daughter, Elisabeth Lasch-Quinn, has scrupulously edited the volume and introduced it. The pieces are concerned with issues and aspects of women's gender identity as revealed in a variety of social and literary artifacts. From his interpretation of the conventions of French comic and courtly love (the querelle des femmes, the Roman de la Rose), through his reading of The Feminine Mystique as a response ``not to the age-old oppression of women, but to the suburbanization of the American soul,'' the scope of Lasch's critical apparatus is stunning--the fluency and generosity of his scholarship and the muscularity, plasticity, and originality of his thinking; his passionate belief in purposeful, ego-suspending activity as the vocation of every responsible citizen of the collective. A review of Carol Gilligan's research among boarding- school girls gives Lasch a platform for indicting the curricular ``dogma of immediacy'' that effectively alienates today's adolescents from wider, more demanding beliefs, exposing them only to visions deriving from their own subjective reality (e.g., Catcher in the Rye). Lasch is perhaps most troubled about the ``rationalization of everyday life'' by the institutionalized social disciplines (psychology, pedagogy, home economics) that began to replace familial and communal authority around the turn of the century. The new controls, by creating new forms of dependence, served to isolate individuals, discouraging political participation and a sense of community and shrinking ``our imaginative and emotional horizons'' while draining ``the joy out of work and play, wrapping everything in a smothering self-consciousness.'' Grand Analysis (but what else would you expect).

Christopher Lasch was a magnificent cultural commentator who I, and many others far brighter than me, refer to as the American Orwell. He had a scholars eye for inconsistency and a serious regard for the truth--so much so that it continually put him at odds with the political left of which he was a part. Frankly, I saw a couple of the reviews below and laughed out loud as this work is not something one would expect your average feminist to have ever heard of let alone view as a threat to their hegemony. It's too sober and erudite for them to even process so I'm surprised that any members of the womyn's studies crowd found their way to this link in the first place. Women and the Common Life is a posthumous collection of essays which were mostly previously published in places like New Republic, Commonweal, and The New York Review of Books. If the reader is even remotely familiar with these publications, he or she will know that they would not be the places in which scathing assaults on feminism can be found. Part history, part philosophy, and part literary review, Women and the Common Life fixes Lasch's high-brow upon marriage, attraction, and the economic relations between the sexes; although, my favorite chapter was the only one in which he came close to giving out a thrashing, and that was in his dissection of professor, and political operator, Carol Gilligan. Her absurd book, In a Different Voice, unwittingly demeaned women under the pretense of saying that they could not think in the same manner as men because they think differently. Lash skillfully, and subtlety refutes the prevailing nonsense of our day, and it is unfortunate that so few will be exposed to this final work.

"Women's Issues" as Crucible for Cultural Critique

Lasch chronically falls victim to those who fail to grasp the radical nature of his critique. He approached social issues from a perspective which quickly eludes the typical intellectual constraints of right and left. WOMEN AND THE COMMON LIFE may well become the largest victim to the casual reads to which his work is so often submitted.
Despite all the talk about the dynamic nature of the patriarchy and renaissance drama, the main gripe of WOMEN is that feminism sold its soul for a mess of pottage. Primarily through comparison of Friedan's FEMININE MYSTIQUE and Goodman's GROWING UP ABSURD, Lasch reveals that feminism was uniquely poised to furnish a broad assault on the predatory capitalism, cheap consumerism and therapeutic stupor that has descended over the American scene. Instead, feminists all too frequently seek only to alter the rules so women too can gain entry into the careerist trap.
One senses that Lasch may have invested intellectually in feminism, hoping it would be the crucible for a revivified Jeffersonian agrarianism, but was subsequently let down. Perhaps because of this, feminism suffers the same excoriation as most other stripes of liberalism throughout Lasch's work. In any event, he has feminists dead to rights when he points out that a truly feminist, truly radical critique of American civilization would have sought to undermine, for the good of women, men and children, the gluttonous and heedless consumerism which so characterizes it. Far from missing the critical insights of feminism, Lasch eloquently argues that it is the feminists, particularly Friedan, who have forgotten their own insights, content to sacrifice their integrity on the altar of materialist fixation. In this tome, Lasch's reputation for erudition remains secure, and even tumesces in the ingenuity of its application through critical intelligence, and, notably, in a subtlety of argument not always present in previous work.
This book is crucial reading to those who find themselves inexorably compelled by feminist ideals, but who find it impossible to discover those ideals inhabiting any portion of the contemporary feminist landscape.

Feminism: repressive, elitist, historically inaccurate

Sorry feminism failed, and Lasch tells some of the reasons why. Feminism, which was supposed to be critical of "patriarchical" values, merely turns out that women want to be men, and when given men's power, just act like men. Carly Fiorina, the CEO of HP is a good example. She fought the male heirs of HP for control over HP, and a proxy fight for a merger with Compaq. And the result? Another pointless corporate merger, massive layoffs in a family oriented company, falling stock prices, and Ms. Fiorina walking out with MILLIONS for basically being a failure. The culture, like HP, would have been way better off to stay with it's "patriarchical" values, then the feminism of Carly Fiorina and her ilk. The previous women who posted didn't read the book, nor do they even understand what Lasch was talking about. Mere men-haters, like that don't offer much to other women, or our society.

First-Time Author Shows Great Promise

The uncertainty of knowing of Maryam and Dr Joe were the characters involved in the prologue that kept me on edge throughout the book. Raj has drawn on his own experiences and observations to deliver a novel that provides insight to life for women particularly but also for men in Saudi Arabia. I puzzled over some of the sub-plots as they didn't seem to lead anywhere, nor to contribute to the main story. Perhaps Raj is leaving the way open for a further book in which these plots will be explored. Having said this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

I am torn on this book because I thought the story was very interesting and I liked the subject matter. I am very interested in Saudi Arabia and study Arabic so I really wanted to read this! There are actually very few novels set in Saudi Arabia. I really liked the idea of the story but it seemed to jump around way too and some scenes could be cut out. I was looking forward to the romance aspect but it didn't really feel like a romance. The love between Joe and Maryam didn't seem very developed and they are in very few scenes together! There are so scenes that are very clichéd and I felt the characters weren't very developed. Some of the dialogue was very weird, for example the main male character says “hell’s bells”. I also wished Saudi Arabia was described better. However, I would read another book by the author because his writing style did keep me interested. I was just expecting more.

A family drama and romance in modern Saudi Arabia. Although set in contemporary Saudi Arabia these restrictions are placed on many women in the Muslim world; the lack of freedom of choice, even amongst the educated. This family drama is mostly about the daughter who does not wish to marry the man chosen by her parents, although in the beginning she accepts her fate but she then meets and goes on to have an affair with an American. However, her father too is having an affair with his American daughter-in-law so this highlights the hypocrisy in the Muslim society.

About the Author
In the theatre, Alan Ayckbourn works, variously, as a stage manager, sound technician, lighting technician, scene-painter, prop maker, actor, writer, and director. He is the author of over fifty plays, most of which received their first performance at the Studio Theatre Company in Scarborough where he spends the greater part of each year directing other people's work. More than half have subsequently been produced in the West End, at the Royal National Theatre or at the Royal Shakespeare Company. They have been translated into over 30 languages, are seen on stage and television throughout the world, and have received many national and international awards. Alan Ayckbourn was appointed a CBE in 1987 and in 1997 received a knighthood for his services to the theatre.

The book was easy to read and an interesting experience for me. It's an exciting story, which describes the problems and the sorrow of lonely children and their busy, blind parents.
This instructive book helps to understand kids, who feel alone and haven't got a good friend to talk to. It also grants you a look at their lonely souls. The story suggests you to think about psychological things. But it still contains some funny scenes.

My opinion about this book is very good because the book was interesting and it has some psychological aspects. I think many children have an invisible friend and so it is really a subject to write about it.
In the beginning I thought that I knew the end of the story but it developed in another way. The book is thrilling and you can read it very fast.

Two Months Of Hell Recorded

This is one of the most devastating memoirs to come out of WWII. Condensed into the period of April to June 1945 the diary records the plight of the citizens of Berlin during the Russian advance and occupation. It truly captures the atmosphere of chaos and the means of survival and coping of the citizens with particular emphasis on the women who were left at the mercy of the conquering troops. While the first impressions are the horrors and ravages of war visited on the citizens,as I read on I was amazed at the at how quickly the author adapted herself to her new surroundings and how quickly the city began to emerge from it's nightmare and attempted to return to some degree of structured normal life.
Apparently it was not well received when first published because people were not disposed to feel sympathy for the Germans so soon after the Nazi era. It clearly belongs on the shelf of any student of WWII alongside Hiroshima and The Diary Of Anne Frank.

Berlin hell under the Red 'liberators'

The anonymous author of this fine wartime diary is amost certainly Marta Hillers, a former journalist, who died in June 2001 at the age of 90.

Although published in the US and UK mid 1950s it was largely ignored by a world not ready to see Germans as victims too. Since being republished, after the author's death, this book has become a belated bestseller -and deservedly so.

It shows the Red Army for the rabble they were-watches, booze and women were considered the booty of war and with a thug like Stalin as a political leader no restraints were placed on the animals from the steppes. Estimates of rape vary from 90,000 -130,000 in the climatic struggle for Berlin, according to medical records, with over 10,000 German females perishing as a result of the animalistic attacks on them, or by suicide or injury as a consequence of such assaults. All told the Red Army raped over two million women as they rampaged across eastern Europe-a figure that included Jewish women who had escaped death in the Nazi camps only to suffer again at the hands of these Red 'liberators.'

The author, an articulate professional, who had toured the Soviet Union before the war, and knew some of the language, describes the orgy of rape, and after having thrice experienced pack rape at the hands of such scum she sought out a Red Army officer -prostituting herself to be protected from the pack.

The author brilliantly describes the breakdown in Berlin society in this diary, starting on the 20 April 1945 (Hitler's birthday) before the Reds arrive in her suburb, and ending on the 16 June - just over a month after peace was restored in Europe.

There may be some people who think the German civilians deserved what they got -but this reviewer is not amongst them. Depravity is depravity, regardless of who is on the receiving end and the rationale for fighting the war was to stand against such heinous war crimes, not to add to the list of the atrocities.

The Red Army's record in World War II is a disgrace and outraged comments from Russian spokesman convince no-one. It is appopriate that the fine British historian, Antony Beevor, has a preface in this republished version. His more recent work on the Battle for Berlin, was attacked as a 'slander' against the Red Army by the then Russian ambassador to Britain. No doubt that Russian apologist would also consider this diary a fabrication (a charge levelled earlier). Still, for years the murder of the Polish officer class in the Katyn Forest, by the communists, was also labelled a 'fabrication' while the continued imprisonment of the Hero of the Holocaust, Sweden's Raoul Wallenberg, was similarly regarded as 'false' western propaganda.

The courage of this woman, and many others, in war shattered Berlin contrasts greatly with the rank record of the Red Army and is a must read by anyone interested in the impact of total war on a great city and its people.

This book tells the forgotten story of the average German citizen's experience during WWII. On par with Anne Frank's diary in terms of historical significance, poignant life experiences, and the sheer deconstruction of society during war. Of course, since it is an adult's perspective, the themes are on a more mature level. The writing is excellent, the images searing and moving. I can't believe this book is no longer in print or that it is not better known.
