Not sure we could do the Hcg diet until we found this book!
By Carol Matz
When we looked at the limited food list associated with the Hcg diet, I couldn't imagine how I could keep meals interesting.

And then I found Tammy's Hcg cookbook, which at the time, was only avaialble in an e-book format, so after some pondering, I plunked down my credit card and bought it, printed it out, and put the pages in plastic sleeves in a 3-ring binder.

We have been so very pleased with every single recipe we have tried from Tammy's book. Some of them we will continue to eat past the very low calorie diet (VLCD) portion of the diet, because they are so scrumptious!

My husband even commented on how it didn't seem like we were eating "diet food." Well let me tell you - if I hadn't had Tammy's book, it sure would have seemed like we were eating diet food, that is for sure, because my creativity does not go nearly as far out as Tammy's does. Thanks Tammy, for providing us with wonderful, fulfilling meals during our first round of the VLCD!

A literal lifesaver
By Julia Woodward
For those who are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese, the HCG diet, which you can easily do yourself at low cost, with tremendous online support from yahoo groups such as HCG Dieters and HCG Maintenance is life changing. The diet is strict, but Tammy's cookbook makes it actually enjoyable by providing yummy varied meals that are totally compliant with the Very Low Calorie Diet phase of Dr Simeon's Pounds and Inches Protocol.

The protocol totally works if followed. Unfortunately there are a lot of "HCG Cookbooks" out there that lead folks to believe they are compliant with the protocol but are not. THIS COOKBOOK IS COMPLIANT and works with the protocol. As others have said, thank goodness for Tammy's book!

Somewhat helpful but overpriced
By Leslie M.
I have mixed feelings about this cookbook. The last thing I want to do when I'm on any diet is *think* about food, so in that respect, this book is helpful. It is full of ideas for meals that fit the hcg protocol, and it has helpful calorie counts for each recipe. I love the Cucumer Strawberry Salad and the Crunchy Sweet Chicken Salad, which have been lifesavers for me!

That said, this book is in SERIOUS need of editing! Several recipes call for ingredients in the directions that were not listed in the ingredient list. You'lll have to guess how much you should add. If you are a decent cook, you'll also need to use your common sense and NOT follow the directions, since many of these recipes are ridiculously flawed. For example, the Savory Onion Carmelized Shrimp recipe tells you to cook the onions and shrimp together and deglaze the pan a few times to make the carmel sauce. Any cook knows that onions take quite a while to carmelize properly, while shrimp take only a very few minutes to cook. If you followed these instructions you'd end up with rubbery shrimp or uncooked onions! She also recommends making an orange sauce by cooking half an orange in boiling water until the pulp starts to fall out of the fruit. The taste is bitter, of course. A much better procedure would be to remove the peel from the fruit, cut the pith from the fruit, add the fruit and peel minus the pith to the water and procede with the recipe.

Mostly this book takes a few good combinations and repeats them using different proteins. It would have been much more helpful if she'd edited the recipes appropriately for each of the proteins. These errors and editing problems are what cause me to question the price.

Enough of my gripes about it. It is helpful and I use it every day. I love the calorie counts because it saves me a lot of time. And while I'm dieting, it saves me from having to think too hard about what to put together. I recommend you try to find it used or some cheaper format.

White Snow, Bright Snow, by Alvin Tresselt

When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grownups do when a snowstorm comes. But the children laughed and danced, and caught the lacy snowflakes on thier tongues.

All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book -- the frost ferns on the window sill, the snow man in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world. Roger Duvoisin's pictures in soft blue half-tones with briliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the gaiety and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text.

A Winter Wonderland from a Bygone Era
By Terrie
This classic book published in 1947 wraps me in a soft fuzzy blanket of nostalgia and makes me crave the good ol' days of clean white snow and sledding, rubber boots and all the neighborhood children playing together in the huge drifts. It takes me back to being snowed-in, warm fire in the fireplace, hot cocoa and the Postman whose name I knew bringing armloads of Christmas cards. The world depicted in this book does not include the sound of a snow-blower or a snow-mobile. It does not have Doppler radar to let me know it's going to snow. In this book we rely upon the ache in a woman's big toe and the fact that a farmer says it smells like snow. The rabbits know it and the kids search the grey sky waiting for the first snowflakes. This book takes us from those first feathery flakes through a really deep snowfall. We're there as the townspeople shovel themselves out. We're there as the grown-ups contend with the winter snow and the children revel in it. Eventually Spring comes and is greeted with as much gladness as the first snowflakes. The simple four color watercolor illustrations are just wonderful and made me yearn for the days when we didn't hurry from climate controlled houses to climate controlled cars to shopping malls with trees and fountains, for the days when we were on speaking terms with the weather. The writing in this book is so lyrical and gentle that it makes a perfect bedtime story and it is sure to warm the heart of the adult who's doing the reading. For example, "Then without a sound, just when everybody was asleep, the snow stopped, and bright stars filled the night. In the morning a clear blue sky was overhead and blue shadows hid in all the corners." Share this one.

The first children's book to mention mustard plaster
By E. R. Bird
I think I shall begin this review by saying something sacrilegious. It'll capture your attention and allow me to get something off my chest. I've noticed that if you tell children's literature professionals that you think it would be a good idea to take old picture books and liven them up with brand new illustrations by contemporary illustrators, they look at you like you've just suggested burning the collected works of Dr. Seuss. Which is to say, they look at you like you're insane. This isn't to say this practice isn't done from time to time. For example, illustrator David McPhail (for reasons I don't even want to contemplate) thought it might be a good idea to reillustrate Beatrix Potter's, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit". Usually, I think re-illustrating old classics is a bad idea. By and large, it's a dangerous practice that should be avoided. Then I read "White Snow, Bright Snow". This is a Caldecott winning book that is a fabulous read. I've rarely read a picture book that so beautifully captures the feeling you get when the world is first blanketed in a thick covering of fluffy white snow. Author Alvin Tresselt's words are some of the most beautiful you'll read, which makes it that much more of a pity that the illustrator on this book was Roger Duvoisin. I know many of you remember this book from your youth and I know many more would beat me with sticks for suggesting anything at all be changed about this wonderful tale. But honestly, let's look at it again in a clear light. I can't help but think new illustrations would suit this puppy perfectly.

In this story, author Tresselt gives us several different impressions and reactions to the coming of wintertide. As the sky looms dark and heavy with unfallen snow, a postman, a farmer, and a policeman and his wife all decide in their own separate ways that flakes are imminent. Heck, even the rabbits and the children are waiting for it to happen. "Then, just when no one was looking, it came". Snow means new boots for the postman and extra shoveling for the farmer. Snow means the policeman gets to soak his feet in hot water as his wife rubs mustard plaster into his chest (don't ask). Snow means the children can make snowmen, snow houses, and snow forts before throwing snowball fights. In time though, the snow drifts away and spring is coming again. The last image of the book is of the children watching the first robin who tells them that spring has really come.

Unlike most picture books written today (I hesitate to say all, but that's my impression), this book contains long wordy passages on one page facing a single illustration on the other. This would be tiresome if the passages weren't so well written. Just listen to this: "In the morning a clear blue sky was overhead and blue shadows hid in all the corners. Automobiles looked like big fat raisins buried in snowdrifts. Houses crouched together, their windows peeking out from under great white eyebrows". Even if you've never seen the effect of snow on a landscape, these lines are evocative enough to make you wish you had. Moreover, they summarize perfectly what the world looks like on a clear sunny morning after a heavy snow. So hats off to Tresselt. Hats off indeed. I only wish illustrator Roger Duvoisin could fill me with half as much awe and wonder. Duvoisin's illustrations are, in and of themselves, fine. I mean, there's nothing particularly bad about them. I liked the distinctly 1940s images (the policeman's wife wears some pretty hip dresses). I liked the image of the policeman twirling his baton. But these pictures suffer from a kind of messy skewed perspective. In context, they work. Yet after reading Tresselt's lovely passages, you find yourself yearning for lovely illustrations. Illustrations that are not forthcoming. I'm not asking for anything spectacular, but the green, yellow, orange, red-orange, yellow-green, and grey pictures (I've just listed the entire color scheme) are sometimes lovely and sometimes dull as dishwater.

So, as I said before, I make the sacrilegious suggestion that we ask another illustrator to try his or her hand on this book. Duvoisin's pictures are fine in and of themselves and I've little doubt that there are adults out there who read this book as children and would bludgeon me with stones for such an idea. Still, the words are so lovely, you can't help but want to pair them with pretty pictures. For an especially good storytime, consider pairing this book with the far more contemporary but no less adept "Snow Music" by Lynne Rae Perkins. Together, the two books capture every essence of what it means to live in a world of snowy whiteness. A great companion to the winter season.

Suburban Perspective on Life in 1947
By Donald Mitchell
Snow is the center of this book. Mr. Tresselt develops how snow is anticipated, experienced, and dealt with by a postman, farmer, policeman, the policeman's wife, rabbits, and children. The book is noteworthy for its social perspectives from 1947 more than for the story. As a Caldecott Medal winner, the high point of the book comes in the Day-Glo yellow, orange, and green images that burst from the white and grey world of winter. Mr. Roger Duvoisin has created a most unusual mix of nostalgia and modernism in these images that evoke a Stuart Davis type of feeling.
"Softly, gently in the secret night,
Down from the North came the quiet white."
"Drifting, sifting, silent flight,
Softly, gently, in the secret night."
These lines open the book and help create the magical mood of new-fallen snow.
The postman says that it "looked like snow." He "put on rubbers" to keep his feet dry. But during the storm, he "slipped and fell in a snowbank." The next morning, he "took out his high boots." When spring finally came, he walked slowly so he could "enjoy the bright sunshine."
The farmer said it "smelled like snow." He "went to the barn for a snow shovel." With it, he "dug a path . . . to the house." The next day, he used the path to the barn and "milked his cows." In the spring, he "let his cows out" of the barn for the first time that year.
The policeman said it "felt like snow." He "buttoned up his coat." But he "got his feet wet." He "had a chill and stayed in bed" the next day. When spring came, he "walked in the park."
The policeman's wife said "her big toe hurt." She checked the cupboard to make "sure she had cough mixture." When her husband returned from work, she "put a mustard plaster on his chest." While he is ill, she "knits a long woolen scarf for him." In the spring, she digs in her garden.
The children "watched" the snow start to fall. They "laughed and danced." They even "dreamed" about playing in the snow. In the spring, they "watched for the first robin."
The rabbits "knew" the snow was coming. They "hid in their warm burrows" underground. During the storm they "hopped about as best they could." In the spring they enjoyed "hopping about in the warm world."
Modern readers will probably be struck by the book's having a central figure be an apparently stay-at-home wife with no children in sight. That was common in 1947, and makes the book interesting from a sociological perspective. How much our ideas of sexual roles have changed since then! This story today would probably have the woman be serving as a police officer.
How can you find joy in snow and the long, cold days of winter? If you live someplace warm, how can you enjoy the change of the seasons by visiting snow-filled fields? When I was a child growing up in Southern California, my father would load his pick-up truck full of snow from the mountains and dump it on our front lawn. The neighbor children and I would build snowmen and have snowball fights, until the snow melted. These were some of the happiest moments of my childhood. I still wish spring came as soon after the snow as it did then.
After you read this story, I suggest that you and your child discuss how each of you perceive snow coming, how to deal with it, and your feelings about winter and spring. Then, this book can become a tool to help you communicate your feelings. I suggest that you extend the conversation then to other physical situations that you both experience, so you can enjoy each other's subjective impressions.
Look for the best in every moment!

A Look Inside A Sick Day for Amos McGee

"Hooray! My friends are here!" Taking the bus to see Amos
The elephant prepared a game of chess. The penguin sat quietly, keeping Amos's feet warm.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2—Amos McGee, an elderly man who works at the zoo, finds time each day for five special friends. With empathy and understanding he gives the elephant, tortoise, penguin, rhinoceros, and owl the attention they need. One morning, Amos wakes up with a bad cold and stays home in bed. His friends wait patiently and then leave the zoo to visit him. Their trip mirrors his daily bus ride to the zoo and spans three nearly wordless spreads. Amos, sitting up in bed, clasps his hands in delight when his friends arrive. The elephant plays chess with him, and the tortoise plays hide-and-seek. The penguin keeps Amos's feet warm, while the rhinoceros offers a handkerchief when Amos sneezes. They all share a pot of tea. Then the owl, knowing that Amos is afraid of the dark, reads a bedtime story as the other animals listen. They all sleep in Amos's room the rest of the night. The artwork in this quiet tale of good deeds rewarded uses woodblock-printing techniques, soft flat colors, and occasional bits of red. Illustrations are positioned on the white space to move the tale along and underscore the bonds of friendship and loyalty. Whether read individually or shared, this gentle story will resonate with youngsters.—Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

From Booklist
Zookeeper Amos McGee always makes time to visit his good friends at work: he plays chess with the elephant, runs races with the tortoise (who always wins), sits quietly with the penguin, lends a handkerchief to the rhinoceros (who has a runny nose), and reads stories to the owl (who is afraid of the dark). Then, after Amos gets a cold, his friends miss him, and they leave the zoo and ride the bus to his place to care for him and cheer him up. Like the story, the quiet pictures, rendered in pencil and woodblock color prints, are both tender and hilarious. Each scene captures the drama of Amos and the creatures caring for each other, whether the elephant is contemplating his chess moves, his huge behind perched on a stool; or the rhinoceros is lending Amos a handkerchief; or the owl is reading them all a bedtime story. The extension of the familiar pet-bonding theme will have great appeal, especially in the final images of the wild creatures snuggled up with Amos in his cozy home. One heckuva visual debut
By E. R. Bird
Sometimes children's book reviewers bandy about the term "classic" like it was a verbal shuttlecock. There's nothing that raises the savvy readers' eyebrows faster than to see some wordsmith drooling profusely over "a new classic" or a book merely "destined to become a classic". Even worse is when they start calling a book "old-fashioned". Nine times out of then what they're talking about is the fact that the book parrots some picture book title of the past. That's the crazy thing about A Sick Day for Amos McGee. It doesn't parrot anyone, and when you read it you feel like you've know the book your whole life. Could have been written last year, ten years ago, or fifty. Doesn't matter because the word "timeless" may as well be stamped all over each and every doggone page. If you want to give a child a book that will remain with them always (and lead to decades of folks growing up and desperately trying to relocate it with the children's librarians of the future) this is the one that you want. Marvelous.

Each morning it's the same. Amos McGee gets out of bed, puts on his uniform, and goes to his job as zookeeper in the City Zoo. Amos takes his job very seriously. He always makes sure to play chess with the elephant, run races with the tortoise, sit quietly with the penguin, blow the rhino's runny nose, and tell stories to the owl at dusk. Then one day Amos wakes up sick and has to stay in bed. The animals, bereft of his presence, decide something must be done. So they pick themselves up and take the bus to Amos's house to keep him company for a change. And after everyone helps him out, Amos reads them all a story and each one of them tucks in for the night.

It's strange to think that author Philip Stead wrote both this and last year's Creamed Tuna Fish and Peas on Toast. Not that the latter was a bad book or anything, mind you, but that was a case where the protagonist had to be a perpetual crankypants. The character of Amos simply couldn't be more different. He's like a cross between your favorite grandpa and Mr. Rogers. I read through this book several times to get down the cadence of Mr. Stead's wordplay too. He's prone to terms like "amble". He parallels Amos's activities in the first half with similar activities with the animals are taking care of him in the second. He knows when to leave sections wordless. And at the end, the "goodnight" section sort of makes this an ideal bedtime book for small fry. Practically invokes Goodnight Moon it does.

There's definitely a Sebastian Meschenmoser quality to this book (a statement that is going to be understood by approximately three people out there). Meschenmoser is a German illustrator who has written titles like Learning to Fly and Waiting for Winter. Erin Stead's style is similar partly because there is a common humanity to every animal she draws. It's not just the anthropomorphic details, like a penguin in socks (an animal Meschenmoser shares an affection for). It's deeper than that. Look at this cover and then stare deep into that elephant's eyes. There are layers to that elephant. That elephant has seen things in its day and has come out the wiser for it. It could tell you stories that would curl your hair or make you laugh till it hurt. That's what I see when I look at a Stead animal. I see a creature that has had a rich full life, and all because of how she has chosen to put pencil/woodblock to paper. Amos McGee himself could not be any better. You love him from the moment he stretches in his pajamas. Everyone here, from the owl to the tortoise is someone you believe in.

Add onto all that the little tiny details as well. How Amos and the penguin sit and stand together, ankles turned inward. The fate of the penguin's red balloon. Where Mr. McGee's teddy bear is at any given time. The portrait of the penguin in the home. The rabbit reading a newspaper on the bus. And then there's the penultimate spread where the animals gather around Amos as he gets ready to go to bed. His left foot rest gently against the rhino's nose, his left hand on the elephant's trunk. Very simple, natural, affectionate touches. You notice them, but you don't. That's the charm.

So there's the content. Now look at the actual art and design. According to the bookflap, Erin creates her illustrations by hand using woodblock printing techniques and pencil." That's impressive in and of itself, but I think the use of color is fascinating. Ms. Stead is sparing. On the one hand, you're never able to identify the book's exact year. On the other, you know in the back of your brain that if the publisher wanted to use all the colors of the rainbow, they could. You could also read the book several times before you noticed the elaborate flower design that ties the horizon in place behind the runny nosed rhino. Little touches, but necessary.

Husband and wife author/illustrator teams emerge once in a while, but they don't always have the golden touch. That the Steads not only have it but are also willing to use it as a force for good instead of evil is gratifying. It's also gratifying to think that maybe we'll see them do more books in the future. I'd like that. I'd like that very much, and I'm wagering that a whole generation of children reading and loving this book are going to like it as well. Here, I'll make it simple for you: Need to buy a picture book for a kid between the ages of four and eight? Buy this one. There you go. Problem solved.

For ages 4-8.

A possible Caldecott contender?
By Kiera Parrott
Philip C. Stead's charming story about a zookeeper and his animal companions is matched beautifully with the elegant pencil drawings and woodblock printings by his wife, Erin. E. Stead. From the very start the reader is drawn in by a warm two-page spread that depicts Amos' bedroom. The action that moves the viewer's eye towards the right- Amos stretching as his day begins and his armoire opened invitingly- is complemented by a series of strong vertical lines. There are the wide yellow stripes of the wallpaper and the thin green stripes on his pajamas. The effect is a sense of being enveloped, or better yet, being hugged. It is a feeling appropriate in a story about mutual affection, genuine kindness, and true friendship.

Amos McGee is an older gentleman (in the truest sense of the term) who lives in a little house sandwiched between two high-rise apartment buildings (a nod to Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House, I presume). Each morning after a bit of oatmeal and tea, Amos heads out in a fresh-pressed uniform to begin his workday at the City Zoo. It is clear from the first glimpse that this zoo is atypical: outside the gate, sitting high in a branch of a tree on the sidewalk, sits a monkey as comfortable as can be; inside the gate we can see a giraffe frolicking on the wide lawn. It doesn't appear that these animals reside in the usual enclosures. Indeed, the animals seem to enjoy a life more akin to a fancy retirement community. We discover that Amos spends his days playing chess with the elephant, running races with the tortoise, sitting quietly with the shy penguin, soothing the rhino's runny nose, and reading bedtime tales to the owl. It only makes sense that when Amos comes down with a bad cold and cannot make it to work, his animal friends hop on the bus and take care of him in the same gentle, loving way.

Besides the artfully understated beauty of the story and the characters, A Sick Day for Amos McGee stands out from almost all other picture books I've seen this year for the absolute genius in its visual storytelling. Erin E. Stead does not merely illustrate. She breathes life into an already delightful story while adding many more layers of expression.
Stead's attention to the smallest details is what allows the reader/viewer to experience this book many times over and still discover surprises each time: from the miniature bus stop for the mouse to the tie-wearing bird; from the sweet absurdity of Amos' bunny slippers to the depiction of a penguin donning floaties. Even Stead's use of woodblock printing to add texture and a bit of color is thoughtful and well-used. It is apparent throughout the work that each pencil line, each color choice, each wrinkle in Amos' face or in the folds of the tortoises' knees, was deliberate and made with a careful eye and a loving hand. Stead has achieved elegance with an organic heart. There is nothing stuffy or too-precise about her lines. Rather, her remarkable drawing skills clearly allow her to bring an incredible warmth and individual personality to each character. The slightly retro feel of Amos' surroundings (his antique stove and pocket watch, the 1950's-esque bus, the lack of any modern technology) combined with the use of white space give the book a pleasant stillness and leisureliness.

Some books come into existence and it seems as if they have (or should have) always existed. They possess something timeless and fundamental. Perhaps they float in that creative ether, just waiting for the perfect author and artist to bring them to life. A Sick Day for Amos McGee is just such a book.

So glad to have found this book!
By Rachel A. Dale
Our librarian threw this new book in with our requested items because she thought we would enjoy it. Boy, was she right! Sweet, sweet story with unique and fascinating illustrations. I couldn't get enough of the pictures. I've already looked to see if Stead illustrated other books, but....sadly...no.

I highly recommend this book for toddlers and preschoolers. LOVE IT!

Hitler and the Nazi Cult of Film and Fame, by Michael Munn

A shocking look into the twisted, lurid world of Nazi Germany’s film industry.

In Nazi Germany, the cult of celebrity was the embodiment of Hitler’s style of cultural governance. Hitler’s rise to power owed much to the creation of his own celebrity, and the country’s greatest stars, whether they were actors, writers, or musicians, could be one of only two things. If they were compliant, they were lauded and awarded status symbols for the regime; but if they resisted—or were simply Jewish—they were traitors to be interned and murdered. This fascinating analysis offers a shocking portrait of a Hitler shaped by aspirations to Hollywood-style fame, of the correlation between art and ambition, of films used as weapons, and of sexual predilections.

The Führer believed he was an artist, not a politician, and in his Germany, politics and culture became one. His celebrity was cultivated and nurtured by Joseph Goebbels, Germany’s supreme head of culture. Hitler and Goebbels enjoyed the company of beautiful female film stars, and Goebbels had his own “casting couch.” In Germany’s version of Hollywood, there were scandals, starlets, secret agents, premieres, and party politics. The Third Reich would launch filmmaker and actress Leni Riefenstahl to prominence by making her its own glorifying documentarian, most famously in The Triumph of the Will, the innovative propaganda film starring Hitler and widely considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made. It is no coincidence that Eva Braun, Hitler’s longtime partner and wife for the two days leading up to their joint suicide, was a photographer, and in fact shot most of the surviving photographs and film footage of her lover.

This book reveals previously unpublished information about the “Hitler film,” which Goebbels envisaged as “the greatest story ever told,” although it was ultimately trumped by the dictator’s own, real-life Wagnerian finale.

Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

“There is nothing new in pointing out Hitler’s passion for Wagner and how it influenced his sense of theatricality. What is new is the combination of this analysis with an account of what happened to the German film industry from 1933 to 1945.”—Sunday Express

Hitler: The Rug-Chewing Actor
By johnn
Hitler, the rug-chewing actor. This might have been an alternative title of the book. It seems like Hitler is an actor who has gone amok, and egged on by this propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. While reading the book, I was constantly reminded of Charlie Chaplin in the "Great Dictator" bouncing his inflated globe until it finally burst. The parallel seemed amazingly appropriate. Unfortunately for the world, Hitler was not the comedic character but rather a asocial charlatan, His obsession with Richard Wagner and "DIe Gotterdammerung" was especially revealing. The prophecy detailed in this last opera of the Ring Cycle most certainly came to pass. If Hitler, as master of the world, went down, then he would take the world with him. This book is an excellent and easy read, and I would recommend it for those persons interested in the psyche of Adolf Hitler.

“I can’t change it. Sometimes you just have to live with it.” ~Anya, Mobster’s Gamble

Carlo Caruso runs the family businesses. The son of mob boss Ennio Caruso, Carlo knows his place and he is up to the challenge of taking care of both the casino business and the not-quite-legal “other” business, all without drawing unwanted attention from the authorities. But when a group of cult extremists, headed by a guy who calls himself Priest, decides to target his family’s casino as a den of sin while attempting to recruit for their cause, Carlo may be in for a challenge he has never been trained for.

Anya was born inside the walls of a cult and has never known anything different. Anya’s beauty has always stirred the wrong kind of attention from the leader and then, when he was gone, his son. Anya has had a complicated and volatile relationship with Priest since she was a little girl toddling around in the religious commune. She knows she deserves better but has no idea how to go about getting it.

Can Carlo and Anya overcome their upbringing and find love?

The best one so far? 4.5 stars
By Deborah
It's hard to imagine living Anya's life, she's never known anything else having been born into the Anointed Heavens it's been her entire life. We know the cult leader was taking her to his bed when she was only ten years old, she's been beaten and abused and yet she remains incredibly strong, she's a true survivor.
Things are changing within the Anointed Hearts, numbers have dwindled and their leader Priest is becoming unpredictable.
Carlo we know and love from the previous books his problem with the Anointed Hearts is the fact that they're protesting and recruiting outside his family's casino the La Bella Regale and not only is it bad for business but it draws unwanted attention.
The question is why just La Bella Regale and not the other casinos?
While moving the cult away Carlo spots Anya and something about her draws him in and she haunts his thoughts.
Meanwhile the cult has a new member and Anya can't understand what Priest doing and why, everything is changing and it's unsettling.
I think this is my favourite so far in this series I loved all the characters especially Jessie and I was hooked from the first page to the last. Anya's suffering made difficult reading at times and I really really wanted her to find her HEA but I had every confidence in Carlo.
I don't read many ARC's but since this was a book I was going to read anyway I couldn't say no.
Why not 5*?
I don't give 5* easily or often otherwise it becomes worthless but at 4.5* this came close.

###### SPOILER ######
How did Anya end up at the casino wearing nothing but a blanket?
I thought at first that Priest had dumped her but then I couldn't figure why, surely he'd lock her up or beat her again not just kick her out and if he was mad enough to kick her out I can't believe he would have given her a blanket.
So it had to be Anya that ran away but then I couldn't see that she would leave without clothes or shoes it's not as if she wasn't rational she had a conversation with Kylie which ended with ".......he's not walking all over me anymore. I'll keep his secret but I won't keep his house or his bed."

Now you're probably thinking I'm just too picky and trust me I know and I wish I wasn't.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Beginning of an amazing series ;)
By Lin-( Nerdy Bookworm)
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is an awesome story full of secrecy, betrayal, violence and drama which starts at the beginning of the story until the very end. This is the story of Carlo and Anya and the deep attraction Carlo immediately notice he have for Anya. She is a member of a cult group and was struggling with the abusive treatment she is receiving from Priest( the leader of The Anointed Heaven) and one enemy(Caesar) is lurking around every corner preparing to destroy Carlo.Anya grew up in the cult and is truly at the mercy of their obnoxious, cruel leader. This is probably  one of the saddest books I’ve read lately but it was so good. It had my attention from the start and my emotions was torn to pieces as well as it made my heart go out for the pain and terror Anya lived through. The author did an exceptional job with this troubling and sensitive subject and I love how it worked out. I connected very easily with the main character Carlo as well as Anya and it was intriguing and sadden, I love a story where two characters think they are in complete control of the casual relationship (insta-lust) then slowly realize it slip into something different. The plot story of this book was very well written and fast paced, I literally could not put it down I needed to finish it at once. Overall, this is a great start to an amazing series and I'm looking forward to read the next one:)

“Because she is the one who finally came along and stole my son’s heart.”
By Kindle Konvert
Carlo is the son of a mob boss, running a legitimate casino & nightclub business. He is extremely hardworking, devoted to his family, and hasn’t been in a serious relationship. A protest by a religious cult brings him face to face with Anya. There’s something about her and her eyes that stay with him – finding himself thinking about her during his frequent bouts of insomnia.

Anya knows no other life. She grew up in the cult and is at the mercy of their cruel leader, Priest. Her natural spirit is hidden until she starts to show it and gets the beating of her life. She is rescued by Carlo and shown a different way of life – one where people are loved for themselves and, most of all, one where she’s allowed to make choices of her own free will.

Carlo has never met anyone like Anya and his protective instincts are thrown up when he finds her beaten nearly to death. However, he holds himself back thinking that with his life, she would only be swapping one prison for another. Anya finds herself integrating into Carlo’s life quite easily, however, her past life and secrets that she’s kept for years haunt her dangerously. This was a pretty exciting read, brutal in places, but tender in others.

Schools of Qur'anic Exegesis: Genesis and Development (Culture and Civilization in the Middle East), by Hussein Abdul-Raof

Qur’anic exegesis has become the battleground of political Islam and theological conflict among various Muslim schools of thought. Using comparative and contrastive methodology, examples from the Qur'an are investigated in the light of various theological views to delineate the birth, development and growth of Qur'anic exegesis.

The political status quo, in the past and at present, has impinged upon Qur’anic exegesis more than on any other discipline in Islamic studies. This book illustrates the dichotomy between mainstream and non-mainstream Islam, showing how Qur’anic exegesis reflects the subtle dogmatic differences and political cleavages in Islamic thought. Chapters explore in depth the intrusive views of the compilers of early exegesis manuscripts, the scepticism among Western scholars about the authenticity of early Muslim works of exegesis and of prophetic tradition, and the role of exegesis as a tool to reaffirm the Qur’an as a canon.

Written to appeal to those with comparative exegetical interests as well as those focused on Islamic studies in general, this book will be an important reference for research students, scholars, and students of Islamic Studies, Theology, Religious studies and Middle Eastern Studies.
