Don't go to Hierapolis without it (and if you CAN'T go, get it for a virtual visit)!

This is a beautifully illustrated and expertly written guide to the archaeological site of Hierapolis along with its museum. I would have loved to have had this prior to my own visit to the site and would recommend it highly to anyone traveling there as exceptionally valuable preparatory reading. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of line drawings of the complete cycles of friezes related to Apollo and Artemis -- important artwork but even more important as visual representations of the myths associated with these figures.Also helpful are line drawings of reconstructions of the structures on the basis of the extant ruins, helping one visualize what can no longer be seen and putting the ruins in proper context. (I particularly like the fact that these reconstructions are modest rather than "over the top" in terms of speculation re: decoration, etc.) There is an informative appendix recreating the experience of consulting the oracle of Apollo at Hierapolis -- a kind of oracular 8-ball experience, for those who remember that desktop toy.

About the Author
Wolfgang Pfeiler is professor at the Institute of Materials Physics of the University of Vienna. He is mainly working on investigating the microstructure of alloys, as well as the kinetics of structural changes with a focus on atomic ordering.
