an inadequate first step

Since 1987, when he wrote The Christian Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Kenan Osborne has written seven books on individual sacraments and on general sacramental theology. In almost all of them, we find this theme: Jesus as the "fundamental" or "primordial" sacrament and the Church as the "basic" sacrament (10). These two sacraments stand, not alongside our traditional seven sacraments, but beyond them, influencing our understanding of them and in a sense departing from the Council of Trent. The implications of this theme on a renewed sacramental theology are the focus of this, his second book.

Osborne is not the first to address the sacramentality of Jesus and the Church. He credits Otto Semmelroth's work Die Kirche als Ursakrament (1953) as the first to substantially address the issue and to make it theologically acceptable. Schillebeeckx's work Christus, Sacrament van de Godsontmoeting (1960) and Rahner's Kirche und Sakrament (1961) follow soon thereafter, preventing Semmelroth's work from being merely the talk of a few German theologians (10). Osborne relies mostly upon these last two theologians, but he is also indebted to the Second Vatican Council, which presented this theme intermittently throughout its documents (11-12).

Osborne begins Sacramental Theology by outlining four factors that have occasioned the present renewal: scholarly research into the history of the sacraments; the development of the Church and the humanity of Jesus as sacraments; the ecumenical movement; and liberation theology (1-2). From here, he moves to an historical account of the word "sacrament" and a treatment on how our use of this word has evolved over time. This is significant because our understanding of "sacrament" must develop even further before it can encompass Jesus Christ and the Church. According to Osborne, such development has begun, but there is still much left to do. Next, Osborne outlines the methodologies that work to further shape our understanding of the sacraments. These include methods of interpreting the scriptural and historical evidence for the sacraments, but more importantly, Christological and phenomenological methods. After laying this groundwork, he comes to the crux of the work: Jesus Christ as primordial sacrament and the Church as basic sacrament. He concludes with an overview of the solemn teaching of the Church regarding the sacraments, and a reflection on how all of this works to enrich our spiritual lives as Christians.

His presentation of Jesus as the sign of the real presence of God, and the Church as the sign of the real presence of Jesus is indeed compelling. He turns to many well-respected theologians and to the very documents of the Church to legitimize this understanding, and he is interested in presenting it not as a break with tradition, but as a revivification of it. However, this is only a first step. More must be done to effectively reconcile this more encompassing understanding of "sacrament" with the clear statement of the Council of Trent that there are neither more nor fewer than seven sacraments. It is not enough merely to assert that the context of Trent influenced a fixation on seven that is too restrictive for today. One hopes that in his later works, this tension is more definitively resolved.

About the Author

Deborah C. Beidel, Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Beidel received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh . After serving as faculty at the  University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic; WPIC), the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the University of Maryland, and Penn State College of Medicine, she is now Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at the University of Central Florida. She was the 1990 recipient of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy's (AABT) New Researcher Award, and the 2007 recipient of the American Psychological Association’s, Division 12 Samuel M. Turner Clinical Research Award. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychopathological Association and a past-president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology.  She is a past Chair of the American Psychological Association's Committee on Accreditation and the 1995 recipient of the Distinguished Educator Award from the Association of Medical School Psychologists. Dr. Beidel has twice been awarded the “Apple for the Teacher Award” from the University of Pittsburgh, an award given by students to faculty considered to be outstanding teachers.  Currently, she serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders and on the editorial board of a number of scientific journals. Her academic, research, and clinical interests focus on child and adult anxiety disorders, including their etiology, psychopathology, and behavioral treatment. Her research is characterized by a developmental focus, and includes high risk and longitudinal designs, psychophysiological assessment, treatment outcome, and treatment development.  Dr. Beidel is the author of over 175 publications including journal articles, book chapters, books and edited books.  Her most recent book, Child Anxiety Disorders: A Guide to Research and Treatment (authored with Samuel M. Turner, Ph.D., Routledge/Taylor and Francis) was published in summer 2005. Dr. Beidel is the recipient of over 20 years of continuous funding of NIMH grants addressing the development and efficacy of behavioral interventions for adults and children with anxiety disorders. 

In addition to her research, teaching, and training responsibilities, she is a licensed psychologist and an active clinician.

Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D.

            Dr. Cynthia Bulik is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is also Professor of Nutrition in the School of Public Health and the Director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program. A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. Bulik has been conducting research and treating individuals with eating disorders for the past 22 years.  As illustrated by her curriculum vitae, Dr. Bulik also has substantial expertise in the area of mood disorders.  She received her BA from the University of Notre Dame and her MA and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988.  She completed internships and post-doctoral fellowships at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA. She developed outpatient, daypatient, and inpatient services for eating disorders both in New Zealand and in the United States. Her research has included treatment, laboratory, epidemiological, twin and molecular genetic studies of eating disorders and body weight regulation.  More recently she has begun to explore innovative means of integrating technology into treatment for eating disorders and obesity. Dr. Bulik has written over 230 scientific papers and chapters on eating disorders and is author of the books Eating Disorders: Detection and Treatment (Dunmore Press) and Runaway Eating (Rodale).  She is a past president of the Academy for Eating Disorders and currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Melinda A. Stanley, Ph.D.

            Dr. Stanley is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine where she also serves as Head of the Division of Psychology. Previously, she was Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where she served as Director of Psychology Training for 8 years.  Dr. Stanley received a B.A. from Gettysburg College in 1980, M.A. from Princeton University in 1982, and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in 1987.  She completed her internship and post-doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1988. Her current primary clinical and research interests focus on the identification and treatment of anxiety and depression in older adults, with an emphasis on service provision in primary care and community settings. Other clinical and research interests include the nature and treatment of generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and trichotillomania. Dr. Stanley has received consistent external funding to support her research for over 16 years, and she has published more than 110 scientific articles and chapters. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 12, Clinical Psychology, and she recently served as Associate Editor for Behavior Therapy. She currently serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals, and she regularly participates in federal grant review panels.

Just a great text book!

I bought this book last year to review as core text book for my psychopathology course - it had everything I needed such as key concepts, solid examples, excellently organized, easy to follow and very thorough. I especially appreciated the lack of fluff and the focus on important concepts, diagnostic criteria and how it related to the DSM IV TR (at the time). This is an excellent book and I use to presently to review the concepts of mental illness, organization of mental disorders, and review of criterias for graduate level students. I have also incorporated the material in some fiction for my main characters. Excellent read and great text book.

Worst Textbook Ever

This textbook is full of errors. Not only grammatical, but there is several informational errors as well. It is extremely poorly written and I'm surprised that Butcher, Mineka and Hooley would allow their names be associated with it. I have considered contacting each of them to inform them of the awful mess that they have allowed their names to be associated with. Maybe when Pearson decides to publish the 15th edition, they'll hire me to ghost write instead of the schlubs that ghosted this edition. It is truly terrible.

Everything you need to know about psychiatric disorders and medicines.

There is so much information in this book about psychotropic drugs, their side effects, and reasons for their usage. I learned much about the use and risk of these drugs. There is also information about psychiatric disorders and very descriptive explanations of what these people undergo. Interesting information. I feel sorry for anyone who needs psychiatric care because their pain may be difficult to treat and the side effects of the medicines may be debilitating. An informative textbook that taught me a lot. I used it for my Abnormal Psych college class.

About the Author

Mary Ann Bruce, PhD, OTR

Mary Ann Bruce, MS, OTR, completed her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and home economics at Colorado State University and her master’s degree in counseling at Southern Connecticut State University. She is currently completing a doctorate in educational psychology at the University of Southern California. She has pursued her interests in mental health, cognition, learning, group and community intervention, and administration in occupational therapy practice, education, consultation, and scholarly activities. Since beginning her career in 1967, some of her positions have included: Director of Occupational Therapy at Bethesda Hospital and Community Mental Health Center, Denver, Colorado; Associate Professor and Chairperson of Occupational Therapy at Quinnipiac College, Hamden, Connecticut; and Associate Professor and Interim Chairperson of Occupational Therapy at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She has assumed professional responsibilities as an accreditation site visitor for the American Occupational Therapy Association, reviewer for the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, reviewer of several AOTA Self-Study projects, and test writer for specialty certification exams. Currently, she is an independent contractor in occupational therapy in Irvine, California.

Mary Ann’s current teaching and research focus is motivation, learning strategies, cognitive processing, and problem solving.

Barbara Borg, MA, OTR

Barbara Borg, MA, OTR, has a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. She has engaged in occupational therapy practice and in individual, couple, family, and group counseling, consultation, and education with children and adults of all ages. She has held the position of Director of Occupational Therapy and Field Work Coordinator at Bethesda Hospital in Denver, Colorado, and for many years was part of the Colorado Council on Basic Education. She is currently assistant professor at Colorado State University, where she has taught for 8 years, and has also served as affiliate faculty. While teaching, she has maintained a small practice. In 1995, she received the Gilfoyle Award for Teaching Excellence.

Barbara’s articles have appeared in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, and she has been a presenter at national and state professional conferences. She has been a reviewer for the American Journal of Occupational Therapy amd Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, and served on the Editorial Board for the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Cognitive Rehabilitation: Self-Study Series (1993). She and Mary Ann Bruce have co-authored two other books in the area of psychosocial practice: The Group System: The Therapeutic Activity Group in Occupational Therapy (1991) and Psychosocial Occupational Therapy: Frames of Reference for Intervention (1987, 1993). Barbara and Mary Ann also contributed a chapter to Occupational Therapy: Overcoming Human Performance Deficits (Christiansen & Baum, 1991).

Barbara lives in Colorado with her two children, Andrew and Emily.

Andrew Harrison holds qualifications from London, Salford, and Leeds Universities and the Trinity College of Music, London. He began his career in accountancy and held teaching appointments in further education before moving to Teesside University as a Principal Lecturer in Economics. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the Technical University of Kosice, Slovakia and in 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University.
