Chase is the family punching bag

***Spoilers ahead, I cannot explain the reason for my rating without describing parts of the book.

This book was disappointing. The authors clearly did minimal research on Bipolar Disorder, as they described it as a woman simply being moody and making bad choices. In deference to the above, I simply did not like how the main character was punching bag of every single character in the book.

The final straw that broke the camel's back was how poorly Chase's 'friends' treated her, despite her mental illness. To give a clear picture, [ Chase willingly went along with Gintana's wish to keep the baby, despite having no want or confidence in being a parent. Not only does she accept her decision without question, she goes above and beyond, being extra sweet, thoughtful, and caring toward Gintana, e.g., brings her coffee and breakfast every morning, weens her off of caffeine, learns her entire job at the greenhouse so she can take over after the baby is born, etc. After 7 months of learning, preparing, and being overall eager and excited about the new addition, Gintana bluntly tells her she does not trust her to be in the delivery room with her due to her being 'crazy' (it was implied heavily). So after having been completely crushed, yet still anxious about not knowing if the delivery went well, her friends declare that she is acting like a 'crazy' person and proceed to physically tie her to a chair.

Another example is how whenever Chase has the courage to voice her opinion, she is often met with 'are you taking your meds?'. As if the mentally ill aren't incapable of having differing opinions...

In summary, instead of trying to understand her behavior, her family and friends make jokes and poke fun at Chase's expense and well-being.

I've mainly enjoyed Bennet's books, but the comedy and characters in this one simply fell short. I appreciate the diverse addition of mental illness, but it wasn't portrayed or handled well. If the characters actually loved Chase, they'd try to understand her mental illness, not call her crazy, make fun of her, or physically bind her to a chair. The fact that the authors, instead of portraying Bipolar Disorder in a positive way, used it as a comedic crutch and victimized Chase makes this book so much more disappointing.

Loved it!

I'm not very good at writing individual reviews because I tend to accidentally give away spoilers and plot points so I

figured I would write out a generic review instead and save myself the time and trouble. If I am putting this review on a

book it means that I found it to be truly exceptional and I enjoyed the journey very much, so thank you to the Author for

putting a great story down on the pages.

Comedic Neurotic Fun!

Very funny. I love the neurotic main character and how she interacts with the world and her loved ones. It reminds me of my own life in far too many ways! A very fun and interesting read. I hightly recommend!

The best part about this book is that it clearly states that the "I just fell in love" excuse is unrealistic and is akin to a child claiming that "a ghost broke the vase" and it wasn't broken because the child was intentionally playing where he/she shouldn't have been.

Alas, a Disappointment

This work is a brilliant magazine article inflated into a mediocre book. The brilliant part ends with page 26. That page, titled "The Concise Manifesto," is a summary of what conversation ought to be, and it may be worth the price of the entire book. From there on, "The Art of Conversation" uses too many devices familiar to writers with deadlines to meet and spaces to fill: short paragraphs, abundant quotations from others, recurring categories and subcategories with slangy names, lists where ordinary paragraphs would do, and subheadings every few paragraphs. In other words, typography and repetition in place of thought.

Two other observations: The author, Catherine Blyth, is as beautiful as a fashion model, judging by the photograph on the dust jacket, and perhaps for her the art of conversation is not as fraught as it is for the rest of us. Also, she is English and occasionally uses phrases that must be clear on her side of the Atlantic but that puzzle me.

Good lessons on listening and even some on what not to say.

The book makes the reader aware of mistakes he may not know he's making. It made me wonder if I'm listening when someone's speaking and if someone is listening when I'm speaking. It gave me ideas of how to react to comments I may not like or agree with, and most of all, it delighted me to read her humorous and ironic observations of conversations.

About the Author

Harry McVea studied law at Queen's University, Belfast, and law and economics at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He was appointed Lecturer at the University in Bristol in 1989, and became Senior Lecturer in 2004. Harry teaches company law, contract, corporate securities regulation, and crime.

Peter Cumper has taught in the Law Department at the University of Leicester since 1997. He has also lectured at the University of Hull (1987-89), William Mitchell College of Law, Minnesota, USA (1994), and at Nottingham Trent University (1989-1997). His main research interests are in the areas of human rights law, and constitutional law. In 2005 he was awarded a University of Leicester Teaching Fellowship.

Recommended for fans of Abercrombie, Ryan and Miles Cameron

Tony Healey is known for his popular sci-fi series Far From Home, and has now quite successfully branched out into the epic fantasy genre with this short but exciting and well written opening chapter of The Fallen Crown series. The Bloody North begins with an Outlaw Josey Wales vibe, this time with swords instead of pistols. It is a tale of revenge and the protagonist reminds you of The Bloody Nine from Joe Abercrombie's First Law series. He is forced to leave the peaceful life he has built after a career as a spectacularly successful mercenary, and has to return to his previously violent ways. It's a very fast paced story with a surprising ending, and the reveals of what's coming next has got me quite anxious for the sequel.

Healey does characterizations and descriptions well, and keeps you on the edge of your seat as the action comes fast and furiously. The dialogue is crisp and often humourous in spite of the deadly events that unfold.

I'm sure this is going to be a very well known epic fantasy series so you might as well get started now. This is one of those books you can't put down.

There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back

Right out of the gate you know exactly what sort of book this is going to be. There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back, there's the obligatory dark hood and sword combo and we've got 'blood' right there in the title.

I rolled my eyes through the first few chapters of butchery and chaos, thinking I knew exactly where this was heading and accepting it with a pinch of salt as the gore kept coming.

Then the book surprised me, because about a third of the way through we transition from the grimmest of the grimdark into something that vaguely resembles traditional fantasy.

We have a wise mentor, a love interest, a humorous animal companion. You know something? It actually improves the work too!

This is not a story of mindless slaughter and vengeance as the opening would dictate. Instead we have a bold but brief tale of personal redemption as a character transitions from being a bloody-minded killer of modern contemporary fantasy into something and someone much more palatable.

Upon completion of the book, author Tony Healey explains his influences and you can clearly see their effect on the story. The man is a fan of traditional fantasy in the purest sense and has only recently got his claws into the more modern 'grey' fantasy of dark brooding killers surrounded in treachery and decrepitude.

Healey's prose is solid, and he is no stranger to writing, with a number of science fiction books under his belt. Despite this The Bloody North is his debut in the fantasy genre and at times it shows.

The companion characters were hinted at but not fleshed out, the story itself, though well crafted, was too brief for my liking. There was room for expansion here, and this felt like a novella that had been padded out rather than an epic. I can only hope the next in the series is considerably larger and we get to learn more about the players within.

Healey name-drops Joe Abercrombie as having influenced him, and there is a lot of the Bloody Nine in protagonist Rowan Black. I'd recommend it to fans of the genre, but with the caveat that it's not going to quite measure up to the standards set by that which influenced it.

The Bloody North is a solid 4/5 and could well be the beginning of something larger to come, I look forward to the second book with keen interest.

Very readable, but not much depth and detail

I was browsing Kindle Unlimited, and the computerized Amazon Recommendations insisted that I give this one a try. So I obliged, partially because the description says "For fans of gritty, action-packed fantasy in the vein of George R. R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie". The George R. R. Martin part, that turned out to be only half true. Yes, it is in a fantasy-medieval world, yes there is some magic, yes it's not a rosy-Tolkien-esque story, but the similarities end there. There is not a lot of depth with the characters (don't really feel like we as readers got to know them as real people), not a complex story, not much in world building, the internal dialogue is rather unrealistic. On the other hand, the lack of depth and detail in the world and characters may be a plus for readers who like to fill-in-the-blanks on their own in stories that don't provide it..

Having said that, this is a very readable book. I finished it in a weekend. Even though it's only 240 pages, finishing a book quickly is a measurable metric in favor of a book - since I didn't have to read it or finish it. There is action, and fighting, and some mystery, moving at a fairly good pace. It is easy to read, the author avoids using unnecessarily obscure words just for the sake of author showmanship (not an uncommon trait with some fantasy writers, I'm looking at you Mr. Stephen R. Donaldson). Calling it pulpy would be a bit unfair to the book, but at the same time, it's nowhere near the level and complexity of GRRM type of work. Geekery plus for the author, the first draft was written on a Chromebook as revealed in the "Notes & Acknolwedgments" at the back of the book.

While it is post-Tolkien in subject matter (lots of gray characters in messed up situations), in other ways, it's still Tolkiensque (Kip, and powerful Wizard). Another ugh moment, there's one short chapter that is essentially bad erotica, a badly written sex scene [to be clear, I am not objecting to sex in books, but to a badly written sex scene].

Timing: this review is written about three months after book #1 was released, so I have no way of knowing how the rest of the series will turn out.

The Metaphysics of Gender is a book about gender essentialism: What it is and why it might be true. It opens with the question: What is gender essentialism? chapters introduce the ingredients for a theory of gender essentialism about individuals, called uniessentialism. It is modeled on Aristotle's essentialism in which the form or essence of an individual is the principle of unity of that individual. For example, the form or essence of an artifact, like a house, is what unifies the material parts of the house into a new individual (over and above a sum of parts). Since an individual's gender is a social role (or set of social norms), the kind of unity in question is not the unity of material parts, as it is in the artifact example. Instead, the central claim of gender uniessentialism is that an individual's gender provides that individual with a principle of normative unity-a principle that orders and organizes all of that individual's other social roles. An important ingredient in gender uniessentialism concerns exactly which individuals are at issue-human organisms, persons, or social individuals? The Metaphysics of Gender argues that a social individual's gender is uniessential to it. Gender uniessentialism expresses the centrality of gender in our lived experiences and explores the social normativity of gender in a way that is useful for feminist theory and politics.

Charlotte Witt is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of New Hampshire. She is also the editor of Feminist Metaphysics: Explorations in the Ontology of Sex, Gender and the Self, and the co-editor of A Mind of One's Own: Feminist Essays on Reason and Objectivity. She lives in Portland, Maine with her family.

Interesting Enough

This work did not contain the clearest metaphysical analysis and has some metaphysically uncomfortable consequences. But it's an interesting alternative to a materialist conception of gender and employs some concepts that are useful in understanding some gender phenomena, if not the nature of gender itself.

Opening Up

Etruscan Art by Otto Brendel is very well written in a language as accessible to the public as it is to scholars. Of the several volumes of Etruscan art I read in preparation for a trip to Italy, Brendel's is the only one I purchased for my permanent library. The copy is perfect.

About the Author
Sally Mann has exhibited and taught nationally. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Chrysler Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and other major collections around the country. She has received grants from the NEA, the NEH, the Friends of Photography, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. She lives in Lexington, Virginia, with her husband and three children, whom she continues to photograph as part of an ongoing project. All of the photographs in Immediate Family were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera.

Reynolds Price was born in Macon, North Carolina, in 1933. His 1962 novel A Long and Happy Life received the William Faulker Award for a notable first novel, and has never been out of print. He has published numerous other books, including Kate Vaiden, for which he received the National Books Critics Circle Award. He has also published volumes of short stories, poems, plays, essays, a memoir, and he has written for the screen and for television. He is a member of the National Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and is James B. Duke Professor of English at Duke University.

Beauty in unexpected places (prudes beware, and be-damned!)

This great book is a great book. Not a fine point, though: it is a germinal book, not a seminal one. Parse that etymology and you will find the basis of why these photographs are not exploitive or vulgar, or even voyeuristic (except inasmuch as ALL photographs are voyeuristic). If it makes you uneasy, ask yourself why, and at least entertain the possibility the discomfort originates from your own confusion and mixed impulses, as much or more than anything Mann constructed or expressed. Sure, the controversy surrounding these photographs still elicits tension in the room when she is interviewed, but only the briefest and least thoughtful observation of that tension would conclude that it has it's source in any sense of guilt or personal moral doubt on the part of the photographer. I read the same sort of tension when on the rare occasion that Robert DeNiro has granted interviews for television, someone asks him to say the line "Are you talking to me?" Mere exasperation with a worn out and dull question. Answered, if it were ever relevant at all.

Again: I find virtually nothing exploitive, pornographic, or psychologically damaging (to the subject children, or the photographer), or even very much sexual, at all, here. Nakedness is not necessarily erotic, and naked children not necessarily pedophilic (by such a simplistic standard many National Geographic photos ought to be expunged, or never printed). These are beautiful and arresting photographs. Part of what makes them as compelling as they are is the daring of the subject and how it is treated, with bravery and a clear eye, and in contrast/tension with a viewer's expectation of what such pictures mean or represent, where they belong, and what the intentions and motives of viewers and photographers are with respect to that subject.

Universally appealing

I was unaware of the controversy regarding Mrs. Mann's work until recently and find the harsh words totally unwarranted and the attitudes unbelievable. This book reflects her understanding of what it's like to be a child in a rural environment and has NOTHING to do with pornography.
The nudity which some find so shocking is natural for kids. It's not until later when we learn our bodies are "bad" that we stop displaying them. That some attach the nudity in the shots of her children with sex speaks poorly of them and those who perpetuate this attitude.
This is a wonderful book that most of you will appreciate and identify with, making you recall memories of your own youth. And, if you were brought up in a suburban area you'll even learn some of what it's like being a kid in the country. However, if your looking for a book with snapshots of smiling kids, you'll be disappointed. This is a photo essay on an all too brief time of our lives, with the pictures being neither cute nor pretty, the photographer having chosen instead to show emotion and reality, and has done so beautifully.

About the Author
Rosemary Counter studied English Literature and Women's Studies at the University of Toronto, where she learned a keen sense of irony and how to write a kickass paper without reading the book. She's since moonlighted (with various levels of success) at a million different jobs-from fashion buying to television lackey to telemarketing and of course table-waiting (her most hated of all jobs). Problems with authority and a complete inability to learn a menu led her to freelance writing, where her work has been featured in Elle Canada, Chatelaine and The Globe & Mail. Somehow between baths and daytime television, she completed The Decadent Housewife, her first book.

why do serious people review funny books

I have never written a review on Amazon and I don't know this author so now that that is out of the way...I do not understand the previous reviewer. Why would you buy a book called " The Decadent Housewife" which says its funny in the description and then complain about decadent housewives? This book was so obviously tongue-in-cheek that I believe the reviewer must have read a completely different book and is confused. This book tells you how to spend a whole day doing as little as possible while trying to figure out what exactly it is that your man does for a living (seriously, there is a chapter on how to figure out what your man does for a living) It has hangover cures, where should you go in the afternoon (and whether you should go out at all), whether you should take a flower arranging class, what a dishwasher is, etc..The illustrations are old school pinup type and it was just a cute funny book...again, what book was the previous reviewer reading?

Worth it just for the introduction

"Being John Malkovich" is one of the most insanely creative films ever made,and a large portion of the credit for that goes to Charli Kaufman's moody,intimate,and sly script,presented here in pretty much the same form as it is in the finished film.Which is great,but on top of that you get,a stellar,caustic introduction in which the author is told to say a few words to the readers,beacause the readers are"owed...something"."I said I would try" replys our intrepid narrator,and what follows is a darkly hilarious trip through his mind as he tries to come up with something insightful or inspirational to say,all the while revealing his self-loathing and profound contempt.In the end, the best he can manage to come up with is "And if you're going to write a screenplay,try to keep it around one hundred and ten pages".Which when you think about it,is probably the most practical advice he could give.

Kaufmanian self-loathing triumphant

The real bonus here is Kaufman's intro--which, rather than explicating the writing or making of this movie, is an anguished, hysterical, can't-take-it-any-more Dance of Despair and Disillusionment that will brighten the day of any struggling scribe. "Wow!" one thinks, avidly turning the pages, "Charlie Kaufman waited five years, got the huge payoff, had a critical and commercial hit...and he's still absolutely bananas! God bless America!"
Los Angeles writers will especially enjoy the part about making friends with the take-out bags left on the floor of one's ever-more-apartment-like car.
Kaufman's growth proceeds apace: his new script ADAPTATION is like a feature-length expansion of his intro here. You've just got to love a guy who's an addled mess and doesn't try to whittle it into a cutesy Woody Allen persona. He's just cuckoo!

For the first time, I'm disappointed in a Newmarket Press Shooting Script

This book arrived today. I cracked open the box, brewed a fresh pot of coffee and eased back to give this screenplay a read. And I can honestly say, for the first time, I'm disappointed in a "Newmarket Press Shooting Script Series" book.

The reason I buy Newmarket Press books is because the screenplays are always in proper screenplay type and format. This book is not. It's an exact reprint of the "Faber and Faber" movie tie-in screenplay published in eleven years ago. A glance at the copyright page confirms this. The screenplay is published in Times New Roman, not Courier as in most other Newmarket Press screenplays.

That's not why I buy Newmarket Press "The Shooting Script" series of books. If I wanted the movie tie-in book published in non-screenplay format, which is still available here, I'd buy it.

Very disappointed.
